Okay so here's the situation, I'm an amateur 3D artist with a bit of a fetish for pirating expensive software.
I am currently looking for 2 piece of software which will play nice with my existing setup - which is as follows.

>3Ds Max - Hard surface Modelling and animation
>Vray RT - rendering, have to use my 2 vega 64s somehow
>Zbrush - scultping/softbody

What i am looking for is
>Some simulation software for fluids/particles, I have my eyes on phoenix and Houdini
>A material editor/creator - preferably node based - and a material painter.

Im more than open to suggestions on the software I am currently using.
Fling shit at me and lets see what sticks.

If you have a hard-on for piracy, just download a number of programs and get a feel for the one you like, but here are my suggestions.

For particles I’ve always used Thinking Particles in the past simply because it integrates right into Max, although I think TP is available to pirate only up to Max 2017 right now. Since you’re using VRay, you may as well get PhoenixFD for fluid dynamics as well and keep everything integrated. As a hobbyist I think you’ll want for nothing with his combination.
I’m sure the local Houdini shills will spill out enmasse soon enough, but the issue with Houdini is that the learning curve is like climbing up a mountain bare-handed, so to get anything done will require time investment and not much instant gratification.

For material creation I’d say the Substance suite is the safest bet for you. Designer is pretty much the only procedural editor worth considering, and for painting you have a pick between Mari and Sub Painter. I would pick Painter just because it’s easy AF to use and is the popular choice, so there’s a ton of resources all over the net for you to use including ready-made smart materials. Mari’s advantage is being able to work on significantly larger data sets, which I doubt you could make use of. The Foundary is also infamous for going after people who pirate their shit.

Other bits and bobs I can suggest? Get rapidtools for Max, it’s a free script collection that has the venerable regularize edge loops and quad cap operations in it.
Also, you can find the latest versions of MultiScatter and RailClone on CGP right now, which might be interesting for you if you want to add even more proceduralism to Max.

/3/ take note... This is the kind of information people are looking for. Not the bunch of autistic bullshit that 90% of posts receive.

this isn't a haven for piracy lad. We pay for our software.

nope, blender is legit as of today.
most of the negativity towards blender comes from people at the college industry. and most of the teachers at colleges are bad themselves.

Check out the FumeFx plugin for Max.

Blender is not really legit if you want to do heavy Particle and Fluid-simulations.
Correct me if i am wrong but you can't even render Houdini sims in Blender due to lack of VDB-support.

why would i pirate other 3d software when blender does everything i need and i'm well versed in it?

why would you render houdini sims in blender when you can render blender sims?

Is this a real question? Are you real? Im the biggest blender fag of them all but blender physics are the worst thing about the program.

Try harder kid. Blender physics are just as good, if not better than houdini adn all the other "industry" programs

Are you retarded? As in actual mental retardation? Boy, I always laugh when people here say blender is a cult but then I read this kind of responses and really makes me think

another blender user here
no way blender physics are good as Houdini, not even close.
i experimented alot with the physics tools and they are all over the place, we could really use a plugin to sort and arrange all the physics related functions.

You are talking about the UI. Blenders problem is not that the tools are scattered through the UI (which i don't even agree on) the problem is the lack of ability. The tools are there, but they are limited and need some serious upgrade.

great choice OP

Substance Designer is amazingly good and quick for that (once you've learned it, but it's quite easy to do so)
