Some 3D artists even encourage young up-and-coming artists to pirate their courses until they can get a job in the industry and pay everything back, because they know the struggle.

I'll just say that if I had to save up money to buy a new piece of software every few months, I would be far behind the learning point I'm at right now. I tried out and learned a lot of industry standard software already, and without torrents, I'd still be modeling shitty low-poly houses and Lego people in Blender like many people on this board.

One important thing, though - software aside, from my experience, I didn't go through a lot of paid tutorials that I think were worth it. There are really really good teachers on YT, and you really can learn everything for free there. Yes, a lot of shitty videos as well, but also a lot of good ones. You just have to spend some time and find them. And not only did I find some paid tutorials not worth it - some of them were even worse than what you can find on YT. Especially be careful of Lynda and Udemy. And to be honest, even a lot of Gnomon Workshop's ones weren't that great. Maybe because I already knew a lot of the stuff they thought there (which I learned on the internet for free), but they really weren't as life-changing and awesome as I expected them to be.

P.S. I think you can find some really good stuff on Gumroad though, and I have to use this post to recommend Redbeard. By far the best 3D tutorial series I have ever gone through, and if you are into this style, I think this is the best possible resource, and totally worth the price.

Just to name a few of my YT subscriptions. Given the insults and the way you write, I know you will still say that you win. I didn't want to bother with writing a lengthy post specifically for this reason, but fuck it.

All of them are on the same level of an average Gnomon Workshop course. And I'll mention some paid courses which I think are not worth it.

>Creating Believable 3D Environments: The Making of "Unmystified" with Seth Thompson

... Ok, I don't have enough time right now to search for them because I forgot the names, but a lot of archviz and UE4 interior tutorials from Lynda, Digital Tutors, Udemy, Udacity are really bad, and you can even see from their renders that they look amateur as fuck. I just mentioned this tutorial from Gnomon Workshop where the guy had really disorganized content, didn't start from scratch and half of his videos were usually sped up workflows with some disgusting fantasy metal music or whatever.

Oh, and some more from Gnomon - those courses that teach you texturing in Quixel/SP and what not - they are literally nothing better than the free courses you can watch on quixel and Allegorithmic YT channel. They don't provide any more details and explanations you can't learn from other places for free. And I also watched some Zbrush tutorials from Gnomon Workshop, also didn't learn anything I couldn't learn from people like Michael Pavlovich and similar. I can continue, but I feel you still won't change your mind, so I at least hope some lurker will find this list useful.

you're giving a lecture to a bunch of fucking students. The notion that you can't remember a time where dropping 5 grand on a rendering pipeline not including licensing costs is fucking absurd to me. They're not impressed because they would never spend that, they're impressed because right now they can't. It's why people learn on pirated software, and render on subpar hardware, full stop. Everyone in that room, if they suddenly had a client list who would hit them up on a monthly basis, would immediately be dropping the cash to build a new PC from scratch.

He's more right than he wrong and discloses he sells products, if you can't think about what he says after because of this then you shouldn't be talking.

There are so many good resources out there for free that it is easy to say that you never need to buy anything. However, I think paid content shines in a few areas (add-ons excluded, those are absolutely worth money and usually reasonably priced). For absolute beginners, I think it is easier to get them to follow a course that lays out the basics of a program with exercises as opposed to following one of equal quality on youtube. Some people need financial investment in order to become motivated. On the other end of the spectrum are master class-level courses that you're going to have a hard time finding anything about unless you pay for it or they did a conference presentation. In between, you are many times better off with Youtube or figuring out the program on your own.

I think Gumroad is a great alternative, I've bought mainly add-ons there but also some tutorials that were "name your price" while also being offered as free. I think these are works of passion that tend to have more thought put into them than the slapdash dreck training websites tend to put together. A lot of tutorials that I've seen from Gnomon, Digital Tutors, Pluralsight, Lynda, etc. are the bare minimum put out by someone seemingly to get a pay check. The Substance Painter/Designer tutorials on the official channel are better at explaining every step in far more detail than the paid tutorials I've seen. It comes down to evaluating what's best for you: I know I can learn from Youtube tutorials by Chamferzone that aren't using my 3d package, but I can apply the knowledge anyway. Some people don't want to "waste" time finding tutorials, so if they want to pay money then I don't have a problem with it. I think Andrew's video can start good discussion yet the people it's targeted at are not the best listeners or most logical thinkers.
