This. You have to design your 3d model backwards with the animation in mind first. Think of what the character will be doing, what sort of poses and actions, and what impression you want someone to take away when they look at the character. Then you build it in 3d.

Her nose and brow lines are too sharp. She has no eyebrows. Button noses can be cute and sometimes they can be hideous, it's pretty bad here. The nasolabial folds are too obvious even though her face is almost neutral, they should crease with a big smile but when they crease idly it makes her look like an old hag. Philtrum is also too wide and well defined imo, make it narrower and/or less defined. Upper lips are too big. Having her mouth hang slightly open makes her look like a downy. Jawline is obviously wide and straight, a little bit of curvature might help.

Also, based on the shading it looks like she has no nasion, here the top of the nose and the brows meet. Generally people have a small dip there and then the nose protrudes out from there.

stylization is based on reality, and in reality the nasolabial fold contributes to the major shapes of the face. I know that you can barely see it, thats the point. Light works to show forms, and since the light shows the form of the nasolabial at all in that image, that means that it still is noticeable. In 3d you model for multiple lighting setups, so in certain lightings -- without the nasolabial fold the face will look weird. You can see it in pic related on stylized characters, which makes those lighting setups not look weird.
Your version with no indication of it makes the cheeks disappear and it looks weird.

I swear you people will argue about anything. The reference you provided was straight on front lighting. You generally wont see the nasolabial protrusion with that kind of light. The original pic it's TOO MUCH...looks like a monkeys muzzle. Do you see nasolabial creases in those pics of Rapunzel and Anna? No you don't because it would look like SHIT and it would make them look OLD. It's a subtle shape...you don't need to exaggerate it to get the effect. I took an overlay to this to change the light direction and you can STILL see the nasolabial fold without the goddamn crease.

No one does cute eyes anymore, they just do ugly giant baseball eyes. The eyelids have to be downplayed so the characters don't look like they have a crack addiction. To do actual cute eyes you need lattices to shape the eyes.

>> No.559112

>>559109
agreed. I feel like the cat eye like curvature of the eyelids, the pretty eyelashes and the big pupils are what makes them cute. just making big round eyeballs is a mistake

>> No.559113

>>559112
This is exactly what I am against, it's just the standard sphere design, it's just been dressed up to hide how boring it is. The eyeball itself is not an original unique shape used to express emotions as was the standard in traditional 2D animation. It is the same boring thing every animation studio does, you can switch Dory and Elsa's eyeballs and there'd be no real difference besides eye color as to how their eyes look. You need to shape the eyes into impossible shapes for true variety and appeal.

>> No.559114

>>559113
But thats not how people are used to concieving "pretty". We make that distinction by those very curves that mask the edges of the eyes. shaping the eyes into impossible shapes would be just uncanny and disturbing, every eye we see in real life is spherical and pretty much the same.

Not uncanny in the slightest, it used to be the standard to exaggerate the shape of the eyeballs up until Pixar became popular. Hey here's even a picture of Pixar's first short film showing even they experimented with eye shapes at one time.

Playing with the eye shape gets rid of the deadness of the eyes. Spherical eyes really reduce a character to cheap animatronics. That's where the real uncannyness comes from, that and the obsession with realism (gross detailed irises for example). Real eyes aren't even spheres, the cornea bulges out which adds lots of subtly to eyelids when the eye moves and they are squishy, at least get that right if you want realism.

The nose and wide mouth are still kinda off putting. I mean you can stick lips on her but a wide mouth is a very masculine feature. It works when a character is expressing a very extreme emotion but a flat expression like that doesn't work in its favor.

And her nose is borderline hard surface modeling from the looks of it, especially the bridge. Anyone, it's a definite improvement over the one you originally posted. Still not Disney cute though.

That's not how you use the golden spiral. There needs to be a hierarchy where every instance of the ratio lines up with something when using the spiral. So Every character would have golden ratio width and height proportions if you used the spiral in character design. People just stick to the golden ratio as it relates to arbitrary heights and not the spiral when they design characters to it.

Even though I'm not a fan of this guy he explains it nicely here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEiaGGp5ddY

It's still sort of silly as characters will never be in straight poses like that.

Ehh... NOTHING related to janet Jackson... a godamn beauty compared to a.... Well...designed....3D....work....

Nah I'm trolling is quite good but I'm feel uncomfortable when I see the face, she looks like a deformed Mickael Jackson, its strange but the main face shape looks good, but remove the "eyeliner" and make her eyebrows looking like... eyebrows. En smaller mouth and a quite finer face/jaws shape. But Godamnit get off this horrible pubes hairs ! If you want to make realistic african hairs make yours a LOT smaller, and please change that face skin color
I'm farting so hard

Did Overwatch manage to do it?

Also, why do their in-game models look considerably less cute? Is it the shading that actually makes characters look cute?

Yes to both questions.

Their in game models are way less expressive, especially in game play.

Disney demands that characters "stay cute" and stay "very on model"

Most 3D studios do not like squash and stretch and smears in 3D, because well, A: They are fucking hard to do in 3D with looking weird and B: Because money and time

This is why Hotel Transylvania give rigging artists and animators a stiffy.

But even there you can see that Mavis, the cute girl character, really is not allowed to do nearly as much off model, exaggerations and smears, because she has to stay "cute".

Cute, young, girls sell. Male characters are allowed to be funny. But you need your cute girls cute, so all the pedos and weebs buy tickets and post about how they want to fuck a rabbit or an underage undead girl on the internet.

Their in-game model have far fewer polygons than the models used in their cinimatics. In-game models have to render quickly so shortcuts have to be taken.

She's old enough to be your grandmother's grandmother.

if this were true Disney would have casted a cute, young girl for their #1 franchise which is Star Wars.

Heres a hint...the girl is borderline hideous.

Your post is discarded.

I think the primary reason people don't like Daisy Ridley is because she plays a coal burner in Star wars.

No, she's also a pretty terrible actress. She only has one expression, and it's almost scared, but mostly just kind of wide-eyed and worried.

If it could help, I assisted to a sort of master class with Glen Keane when he was working on "Duet".

It was very instructive, but all in all, they keep using the good old principles of Walt Disney.

As a side note tho, they heavily modify their modelling software.
For example, they have a module to modify the model according to a frame. Let me explain.
Imagine that you have made a cute bouncy bunny. At the key frame, you will need to wisely choose the position and distortion of the said character. So, to better catch the bouncy and "living" side of the thing, they can distort the model pretty much like painting, at every frame they want / need.
And it's not free form deformer or so, you sketch your form over the paused frame, and the computer will try to modify the geometry and animation in accordance with your sketch.

Granted, animation is more life alike and fluid.
