jack of all trades, master of none; is surely better than a master of one

Only if your skill is shit.
A master of one very specific technical skill is definitely better than just being a replaceable ordinary worker.

No company ever hires jack of all trades. They hire specific artists to do the hair, textures, modelling and animations of characters, which only works if those artists are experts at their areas.
Nobody's gonna hire you if you go and say I know a little bit of this and little bit of that.

being a specialist is fine. but you should have at least a working knowledge of everything.

Not being a specialist means you're not good at anything. And thats the bottom line.

>> No.536496

However you can start as a generalist, work for some starup and then pick what you like doing better and specialise in it. You still need to know basics.

Another thread like this? Did you lose your job to a generalist?
I've been working for four years as a generalist. It depends on what company you work for.

The biggest mistake you can make is to assume that the only career you can have as a 3d artist is in some studio.

The amount of random shit that people want everywhere is a great source of income if you know how to find those jobs.

My rent has been paid almost this entire year from doing simple animations & graphic design.

Yeah I may not be working on a game but I'm still getting paid; and I'm definitely not focusing one area either.

I wanna know know the extent of knowledge you have in each area. Like, can you make rigs with advanced muscle systems, can you make good dialogue animations, are you handle advanced render nodens and stuff? How good is your sculpting?
I honestly wanna know.

You only have one skill and will always be a wage slave.

>> No.536965

You have shit skills compared to any specialist and they will always fill the spot. Nobodys gonna hire someone with below average experience over an expert in their field. Generalists dont fit into any gamemaking pipeline, you will always be unemployed.

Also everyone is a wagslave unless youre the boss. Not just in 3D but in most jobs

I'm okay with people deciding to be specialists, but what you fuckers don't seem to realize is that being a generalist means having expertise in many steps of a logical and efficient workflow/pipeline.

You don't just shout around "hurr durr I can do everything!"; those people indeed don't get hired.

Being a generalist means building your knowledge about many fields in a coherent way and being able to have oversight on various types of projects (mobile, next-gen, cinematic assets, animation, etc.). Those are the kind of people that become irreplaceable and grow up to become respected Art Directors.

If you even want to try to refute that, I suspect you're simply a moron with cheap deviantart-level skills.

I'm Barack Obama and 3d generalists suck dick.

>generalists become respected people
Generalists are on par with idea guys and they just throw some babby level work that you can learn from youtube. Art directory is a whole other field where you learn about about storytelling, lighting & composition, gameplay dynamics and gamification. Generalists don't even come close anywhere near the field of Art Directory.

Generalist have zero ambition or discipline to specialize in any field, they are idea guys in closets.

I made a point to tell everyone (without being obnoxious) that I do 3dcg & graphic design. Even if I was at a crappy hourly job I would bring up how if they ever needed a poster, flyer etc, I could and would do it.

I also did the much frowned upon working for free, but I did it more so as an advertisement in hopes that they might tell other people.

Eventually I was making a few websites, and now I make flyers and motion graphics for a buisiness. And I have a pretty decent portfolio now.
