Any thoughts on Maya 16? Should I make the switch, is it worth it?

Is Mental Ray out for it yet?

Is that a joke? Mental ray has always been a main render for Maya. And screw mental gay. ARNOLD looks way better plus, renderman takes the cake and is also free

Renderman is only fwee for non commercial use. Its pathetic money grab

It's a way for students to learn the software before graduation so they can go into the industry with the skills renderman houses need you to have.

The only skill prMan teaches you is how to press render and then come back the next morning

When the cracked version if Maya 2016 came out two weeks ago, Mental Ray was not included, you can now get it as it is officially out

Reason I asked

Who cares about mentalDelay?

Use renderman or vray or gtfo.

lmao. If you dont use Free Renderers you need to gtfo

I don't understand how you get a cracked version of a pay per month software now? Sorry I was out of the loop for 3D modeling software. I stopped learning 3D and went back to learning traditional 2D hand drawn animation I find more fun for my own needs. I took a look recently and saw everything is PAY MONTHLY NOW AYY LMAO... Sigh...

So how do you crack software that apparently requires you to be logged into their website / server whatever it is they use? This pay 2 use thing has further killed my drive to use 3D software. I know of blender but any good artist / studios I follow or like use Maya / 3DS Max or Lightwave.

Mentalray produces the most realistic results you dunce. It's just little kids like you who are too daunted by a production proven renderer that has such a large list of features to learn. It is by far the most feature rich renderer and is why it's so popular when it comes to VFX. The only thing VRay is ok at is architectural rendering.

blah blah blah I don't like programmers having jobs
blah blah blah I don't understand the benefit of having full paid staff and support for a product
blah blah blah I don't understand the way such a situation allows a product to get more feedback from studios so features can be implemented in a more standardized way that doesn't require people building their own forks
blahblahblah I'm fucking autistic.

Yes, Maya 2016 is fucking amazing.
You can sculpt directly on 10m+ mesh with the new sculpting tools.
The UV tools got an update with some awesome interactive UV "brushes". The Hypershade got a huge overhaul and a nice shaderball preview.
Bifrost got updates.
XGen got updates.
The UI got improvements and the tools are much more organized in the menus.
And there is a tonne more improvements it got.

Also, Mentalray 2016 is so great now.

Is Maya hard to learn? I'm thinking about taking a step back into 3D modeling down the line. I may only have 30 minutes every other day to work with it to learn it. Would it be worth while and easy enough with such constraints?

>> No.472642

>>472638
No, it's very easy to learn and is the most well documented software out there. You'll find tutorials everywhere.

>> No.472652

>>472638
I had a decent learning curve. Its imo the best overall 3d package out there. With the update is also the prettiest and with the contextual right click menus is also the fastest most mouse dependent software . Most of the others are all about hotkeys or constantly clicking in menus on the sides.

Im learning modo and while it has more tools than maya I feel the workflow is much clunkier due to depending on hotkeys mostly and having to drop the tools. Same issue with 3dsmax.

Its not as hard as zbrush, imo that was the hardest program to learn, absolute behemoth software. Most people just scratch the surface of it and manage to produce decent to very good models with limited knowledge so that's a plus.

I recommend you learn maya+zbrush for about a year and then try to learn others as secondary packages.

>> No.472656

I think the important question here is what are you using now and what would you like to use maya for. I switched to maya 2016 from blender because I need a programm to handle rigging, skinning and retopology and blender is pathetic in extactly those fields.

So, I get that you must really like blender and all, but what's the deal with everybody having to use the same shit as you do?

Like I've used max all my life, never once have I felt the desire to walk up to some maya based artist and go
"Fuck all of you, and fuck all of your software right in the ring and all the way back to Saturn faggot, use MAX or DIE motherfucker"
Just doesn't happen to me, not even a tiny tinge. How is someone a enemy just for using some other software? That's just pure lunatic.

First of all this thread isnt about which software package is superior.
Second no I didnt tell free software to go fuck itself, I love blender!
But it cant handle 6 million polygons and it also doesnt have good retopology tools integrated, while maya handles even 10+ million polygons at very decent performance and has the quad draw tool and so on. And have you ever skinned something in blender?
the weight painting is unresponsive and blender does not respect weight normalization or has proper max influence settings... or proper weight mirror tools... or a good smoothing... I wish it had those things im not keen on paying for Maya LT or Maya but they havent even announced changes for those fields on version 3.xx
