I think he just doesn't understand that "outsider art" isn't a reflection on quality of art, merely that it indicates the lack of formal training.

Most of the people on /3/ are probably outsider artists when it comes to 3D graphics. No formal training but a passion for the art form motivates them to create and as a result they learn using techniques professionally instructed artists don't learn. It's not a judgment on their skills or talent.

In fact outsider artists often end up inspiring insider artists.

Henry Darger, for example, is one of the most renowned and influential outsider artists whose work wasn't discovered until after his death when his landlady went through his apartment and discovered his opus magnum. She and her husband were themselves art enthusiasts and recognized the brilliance of his work and preserved it. Another landlord might have dismissed it as the obscene delusions of a schizophrenic and destroyed it. As a result, Henry Darger's artwork received international attention and has influenced countless insider artists and has transcended its medium to influence artists other than visual artists.

The brilliance of his work, the posthumous acclaim, and its influence upon other artists does not negate the fact that Henry Darger was an outsider artist.

Likewise Wendy Vanity is an outsider artist. And the Sex Pistol and the vast majority of Pre-90s punk rock musicians are outsider artists.

I'm a musician by trade and and an insider artist because I have decades of formal musical training but I can count dozens of outsider artists as inspirational forces that have influenced my own works. In fact without a strong outsider arts scene insider art becomes conservative and stale.

3D graphics and animation has really only become a medium in which outsider artists can thrive in the past decade because the tools that stood as a barrier to entry have only recently become economically democratized.
