Except that not every path-tracer is that horribly noisy. Cycles is the most basic of basic path-tracers, it has no pre-calculations to determine light source focus, it has no algorithms to deal with fireflies, it's all around just inefficient. Something like Keyshot or Iray converge to a fairly clean result in a matter of seconds, and within minutes they are nearly noise free.
