please treat my anus gently, first post.
asking for some critique on this one.
its sole purpose is to get me into a game design program here in sweden. task was to create something appealing and basically show off skills.

what would you guys (preferrably someone from the business) say about this?

kind regards and thanks in advance

>> No.423005

off top of my head, grass is to straight, trees obviously cloned.

>>423005
thanks. the grass can easily be fixed, just a bending parameter. though i don't have time to make more versions for the trees. will they work or should i try to blend them with some other ones?

What is the purpose of this game design program?

Is it some general purpose course that will cover the basics of making games?

replying with update.
applying for futuregames design program 2014 in stockholm, sweden.
i guess their website would provide better information than i ever could.

That shit's pretty, yo. Problem: all nature scenes are pretty. However, this one is pretty pretty.

When you show this off, don't show stills. Show it in motion. Since this is going to transition you into a game dev program, do a pass with characters. Show layers. Show how the layers will make this an environment that's as interesting to do stuff in as it is to look at. Otherwise, you're competing on the same level as all of the other drag-and-drop gamedev wannabes with a copy of cryengine.

3D - wise everything looks pretty good, some small touches might really push it, but right now it's in a very good place. I'd suggest adding a couple of small bubbles and things in the water, maybe a couple of things floating on it like fallen leaves or petals, just to add some interest. The displacement of the water surface is kind of evenly rippled throughout which looks a little off, remember the water will be more rippled along the edges and through the middle it'll be flatter. You could add some tiny insects in the air as well, midges and gnats usually like hanging about over streams. These elements should add some real detail to the picture and show you've really thought about creating the atmosphere. Finally maybe add some trees further back in the frame, this looks like the woods basically extend about 30 forwards from the camera then stop. keep the areas of visible sky in between but maybe imply the ground slopes downwards or something instead of just stopping.

The main issue is the 2D, basically if I was critiquing this as an image not a scene - the contrast is too high in the foreground and it needs more cleanly separated areas of tones . The trees in the background look great, the haze really adds a nice touch of realism, but the foreground rocks and grass are too saturated and the tonal contrast is too high. Also pull back the chromatic aberration just a touch, it's too noticeable on that foreground tree on the left.

Overall though very nice work, feel free to post moar.

would you look at that, some good criticism.
thank you.
just answering all of this at once:
1:i will probably render out a gif to show it in motion. it looks good in a still, but in motion it really shows the leaves falling, grass moving etc.
2: yeah, i need to extend it. alot. The one thing that is keeping me from it though is the information they gave at the information day. they dais that they'd rather see detailed work on what you REALLY are good at, not a broad selection of stuff you kind of know.
would simply clogging the background with trees pull of the illusion of a thick forest? the problem will be the pretty reflections and light falling through the trees on the left disappearing.
3: color correction might be added if time allows.
i will post moar, since i got some pretty awesome response.
cya in a few.

This.

Also, did you make all the assets yourself?

>> No.423104

>>423103
no.
about 95% of the objects have been completely retextured by myself, but small and complex things such as the water shader and tiny flowers are just straight-up taken from the SDK folders.
i suck ad modeling, so the geometry is mostly imported and retextured by me.

Oh, so nothing really. Showing knowledge of an engine is a plus, maybe do some similar scenes in different engines to show your range. Im assuming you suck at art so this would be quicker

>> No.423110

>>423109
i wouldn't say that i suck at art.
i would however claim that i have not studied 3d modeling, and my primary "talent" is texturing, composing and lighting.
calling textures "nothing" is pretty ignorant, especially if you yourself have any game/3D experience.

Good luck with it! Hope you get in!
Instead of a .gif though, maybe you could try the .webm format to get some better quality on it.
Cheers!

Its not ignorant to know youre a generalist so far. With games you want to have a speciality in one area and knowledge of others. You have shown any comparison for what level is required to get in, so all there is to judge is babbys first engine test, its pretty sure, but in the game world pretty pointless.

Try making it tell a story, envision a game scenario around it, put visually pleasing icons/placeholders depicting actual games design. Retexturing is the equiavlent to tumblr fan art, Looks nice but overall pretty shit.

Hi OP,

I had a look at the program which this course offers.

I don't know if you were already planning this, but if you think about this scene from the perspective of game design, it would be good to add some sketches about how this scene should be used as a level. Just making a pretty picture is not enough. Show that you understand what makes a good level. Show the flow, the points of interest, etc. and how the lighting, colours and shapes reinforce these things.

Besides that, you got already some great feedback.

I agree on the GIF issue. No GIF!

>> No.423190

would play in it with an oculus rift/10

>> No.423238

It looks nice, but the engine/assets you used do all the work for you...
