Hello /3/

I'm making an Aztec axe... an Axetec.. lolol.
This is the profile of it which I just blocked out.

Next up, blocking out the profile with a spline.
-extruded that shiet.
-Fixed the polys a bit.

>>363295

In this day and age I don't see the point of low poly or why you wouldn't just use something much quicker and that makes much smaller files like photoshop for pieces that are essentially going to be 2D if ever actually used in a game anyways.

switching to paint because I'm so fresh you can suck my nuts.

Added some details, I plan on having the shards along the edges be obsidian shards. Granted, they are very thick but I quite like the look of it and I can kind of see it "working" visually.

What doth thou think so far?
I'm thinking about extruding the mid section of the... umm, area between the edge of the blade. Don't worry, I'll show in the next image.

So I extruded the midsection and bevelled it slightly, I quite like the look. I think I might fix the UV Mapping next.

Any valid opinions so far?

It's an extruded stick, finish it and post a textured version already.

Also, this should be in the WIP thread, this board is too slow to have a thread for every object someone creates, especially if you are going to post updates every time you extrude something.

Thanks.

I've been considering if I should have the whole thing be wood, or of the midsection I extruded should be stone. Contemplating this while I'm working on the UVs.

Basically from the image shown here..

- The "stone area" could also be wood and the "wood area" could be stone.
- It could also just end up doing what I display in the image..
- I could also just go with keeping the entire thing wooden, as per my original intention.

I'm feeling increasingly conflicted about this.

Maybe also make the lower extension thing of the grip also made of stone?
Depends on what you want to use this model for really. If it's for a game and it's a weapon you can pick up and use, your original setup might be a better idea, as it makes the model look more "valuable" and interesting.

If it's just a miscellaneous prop, then you might still want to make it all out of wood so it doesn't stand out from the environment as much. Again, it depends a lot on what you want to use this model for, without that info we can't say much.
But if your goal is to make the model as interesting as possible, for example for your portfolio, then your current setup will do. Maybe also add some carvings and shit to the stone parts using bumpmap painting or zbrush.

Of course, please excuse my mysterious disposition.

This is indeed a weapon for a game.
I'm actually making it because I have an urgent assignment pending (school stuff).

I was going to make some carvings regardless of whether it was stone or wood, however I'm unsure of how to achieve the effect I want. I've had bad experiences with zbrush and engravings before.

I also do not have a lot of experience handpainting textures (straight in photoshop) my usual workflow has been;
1. make basemesh in 3ds
2. get UVs straightned out
3. import to Zbrush for sculpting normal+lightmap
4. Fiddle around with it all in photoshop, fixing values and applying a texture "overlay" to the parts that need it.

Right now I just want to get this finished fairly fast so I can deliver this assignment I've had pending for a while..

Done fixing UVs for now.
Kept wondering if I should just go with handpainting the textures straight in photoshop, so I tried to put up the UVs in a sensible layout.

Thinking about using some of the open space to fill in the pieces of shards so I can get more detail on them. Or should I just keep them where they are because that will somehow be better for handpainting directly in photoshop..?

Creative freedom is not that narrow.

I'm not making an aztec mace, or machuitl. I'm just making an aztec inspired weapon that looks a bit like an axe.. because I can.

But I do appreciate your observational skills.

Finished playing around with the UVs.
I did end up scaling the obsidian shards up, just because I had the spare room.

I've started sculpting the obsidian shards in Zbrush. The two on the bottom are "complete" so to speak. The rest of them need to be chunked down a bit with TrimDynamic and maybe add some finer detail with DamStandard..

Finished detailing the shards.
.. Have a look.

Any tips or critique, of course, is welcome.

Does anyone know any good tutorials or just speedsculpts of wood?

I'm not sure how to go about sculpting the wood, I want it to be subtle but there. I'm not going for the stylized look.

Thanks.

PS; Image relevant: It is how I feel.

1. Grab wood alphas.
2. Apply to model.
3. Add some big detail with dam_standard
4. Polish.

Finished sculpting this piece of shit.
I'm not happy with how it came out but I don't have time to be redoing it.

I couldn't quite get the wood the way I wanted it and the stone areas look retarded. Bah, the whole thing looks retarded. Maybe I've just been working on it for too long.

Time to start working on the textures now.

I think I might end up retopoligizing it at a later point.

I had actually set up and used the UVs from max to avoid doing it at a later point but the thick carvings on the wood area were a bit dissatisfying, and I also messed up the highlights a little on the stone texture.

I will definitely be coming back to this "Axetec" for a little reworking as well as making a few other similarly inspired weapons.

And I'm gonna make them more "properly" the next time.

Thanks for the support /3/

On a related topic, and a warning. I am incredibly dissatisfied with how it came out. I was pressed for time and simply had to get on with the assignment I was doing.

I'll deliver the finished product today when I get access to the computer it's on just because you asked, and this thread needs an end.
