I wish I knew the trick to modeling low poly characters. Making machines and objects and shit, that I can grasp, but organic stuff? I just don't get how you're even meant to start.

I've found that making paper craft and origami has helped me with my low poly modelling. I often find it useful to imagine that I'm going to be building it out of planes of card and trying to think about how it would work.

Depending on how low-poly, I generally go pixel-art for really small stuff. For larger low-poly, I generally up the texture resolution to 4x the final size. Normally scaling down muddles the textures but if you do some sharpen filters and/or up the contrast, it comes out awesome for the final size. This way in low-poly texturing all you have to do is use light and color to merely suggest the detail.

How can I fix my model so that 3ds stops treating it like its inside out? Something happened and when I use the push modifier I have to use a negative factor to inflate it, otherwise it shrinks.

and the other problem with this is that when I go to bake my occlusions and cavity maps, the entire bake turns out black because it thinks every face is internal.

Absolutely, it's my main weapon of choice.
For me, it actually crashes less than anything made by Autodesk so I guess the reputation is a little unfair. Of course, common sense dictates that you should set autosave to every minute anyway.
I recommend that you get the trial first to see if it's your kinda app, and if it doesn't have any issues specific to your machine. I was already sold after a week or so of using it, a month should be more than enough.
