Here's a quick demonstration

with the first object, going into edit mode I can just hit G, X and stretch it along the global X axis, which is handy because my cube is aligned along the normal axes

with the second object, which has been rotated while in object mode, I can hit G, X, X and stretch it along the local X axis, since again my object is aligned along the local axes

I then create the third object, and I rotate it in edit mode. I'm trying to find out if there's something I can do to achieve the same result as in my second object. I can't just use the global or local axes since the contents of the object are what have been rotated. Is there a way to do this?

And if there isn't a way, is there an easy way for me to rotate the contents of obj3 such that they once again align to the axes even though I no longer know how much I rotated it by?
