How would you go about modeling something like this?

Here's what I've come up with so far, it's not great though...

>torus with low minor radius
>subdivide
>modifier -> simple deform -> stretch -.3 on z axis
>select random faces ~5%, sz2, unselect
>repeat until happy
>discombobulator
