i think i understand your problem so maybe ill chip in with a "hackish" solution. use the same formula for what we did earlier. but lets just say i want to get a random vertex to dictate the movement of an entire mesh.

so i select that vertex/edge and turn on proportional editing. but instead of smooth i change it to "linear" or "sharp" and it should grab verticies as a whole and move them on GGZ.
it does work, but it needs some tinkering and its not reliable.
you can also do other "hack" methods but simply snapping a curve to a vertex or an edge and then move your mesh with the curve modifier.
either way. what you want should be easily solved by a python script, but you should ask around in blender communities and do some snooping. good luck.
