You will never be able to just model a hand and rig it and have it turn our ok.
You need to figure out where all the joints are and make sure your geometry can form a proper fist, grip, sign etc.
This image highlights how I go about it.

Once you've figured it out and gotten all the digits to just the right position and ratio, you use this geometry as a guide to build your hand mesh.
